Rundāle - is the place where the Curonian Versailles was built in the 18th century - a residence of the Dukes of Courland. Even today it is a true pearl of the Baltics and nothing comparable in terms of size and state of preservation can be found within a radius of 500 km.
The Rundāle Palace is unique. It is one of the few places in Latvia where the ambience of the 18th century has been preserved. The rooms open to visitors show the original decoration of the 18th century. It took more than 40 years for the restorers to restore the luxury and splendour of the halls and rooms. Among the exhibits on display is a collection of fine arts and porcelain.
On the outward journey to Rundale, we stop in the town of Jelgava (Mitau). Here stands another palace designed by Rastrelli. Unfortunately, its interiors were completely destroyed during the Second World War, but even its exterior still manages to impress. Worth seeing are also the other historical sights of the city - Academia Petrina, Church of St. Simeon and Anna, the tower of St. Trinity Church etc.
To finish the program I recommend you to visit the Mežotne Castle, the best example of classicism in Latvia. The visit is particularly impressive in the warm season, when the castle is accessible via a pontoon bridge.
