Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister
Visit with us one of the most important painting galleries in Europe! About 600 paintings are presented on three floors, a large part of which came from the estate of Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel. This art-loving prince amassed a collection of paintings of European rank in the 18th century. His preference was for the Flemings and Dutch of the 17th century and so the Kassel collection is one of the largest outside the Netherlands! Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and Frans Hals are representative of the gallery's high-calibre focus. So it comes as no surprise that Kassel is home to Germany's oldest and perhaps largest Rembrandt collection, where you can marvel at the "Blessing of St. James" and the "Portrait of Saskia of Uylenburgh," among other works.
A large number of other internationally renowned painters enrich the diversity and abundance of the Kassel gallery. Look forward to Albrecht Dürer's famous "Portrait of Elsbeth Tucher" and the wonderful works of Lucas Cranach. Marvel at the sight of Titian's magnificent "Portrait of a Commander" and listen to the exciting stories on the works of Tintoretto, Murillo and Poussin.
Whether history painting, portrait, landscape or still life - there is something for every taste in art!
