This most significant landmark is located about three kilometres west of the centre on a volcanic cone. The castle was built in the 14th century as the residence of the Hungarian prince Korjatovyč, but it had to undergo several reconstructions. The walls of the castle withstood many enemy attacks. In the previous century it served mainly as a prison, today it houses the Museum of History. Extensive restoration work has been carried out in recent years. From the top you have a very nice view over the flat surroundings, and on a clear day you can see far into the country over the city. Interior tour of Palanok Castle.

Day 4. (DI) Yaremche - Kolomyya - Chernivtsi

  • Departure
  • First we will visit Yaremche - a climatic health resort, which in the 19th century was a popular resort for wealthy people from Poland and Austria-Hungary. Many gentlemen from Vienna, Warsaw, Krakow and Lviv spent their holidays here. During the Soviet period there were many sanatoriums here, which took in both adults and children. The place is situated in a picturesque environment on the bank of the river Prut, surrounded by mountains and forests. Fresh mountain air, beautiful nature, strongly developed tourism infrastructure and, of course, the immediate vicinity of the ski resort Bukovel make Yaremche very attractive for tourists both in summer and winter.
  • Continue to Kolomyja - which is considered the secret capital of Hutsul land. There you will visit a most interesting Easter museum.
  • Our final destination for today is one of the most beautiful West Ukrainian cities, which presents v.a. very rich k. u. k.. Past presents. After the lunch break, the city tour will start right away. The city of Chernivtsi (German - Czernowitz) was an important trading post on the river Pruth for the Kyiv Empire and the Principality of Moldavia, developed in the Austrian era (1775-1918) as a booming provincial capital of the old Austrian Duchy of Bukovina to a place where "people and books lived". A great many literary figures -among them Paul Celan, Rosa Ausländer or Gregor von Rezzori- have set a monument to this multicultural oasis in the German-speaking world. You will see a wonderfully preserved inner city Viennese character, where on the example of the Herrengasse, the former Orthodox Metropolitan Residence (now a university and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Jewish Temple and the respective Volkshaus for Germans, Poles, Romanians, etc. very many similarities and differences to Western Europe are comprehensible.

Before World War I it was located in the former Russian governorate of Bessarabia and in the interwar period it belonged to the border triangle of Romania, Poland and the Soviet Union.
