Description of Tour

This shore excursion takes you to the western outskirts of Tallinn. Picked up from the cruise terminal, we'll take you on your first hike along the Baltic Sea cliffs of Tabasalu. The entire northern coast of Estonia is part of the Baltic Glint, with cliffs up to 50 meters high. Many rivers therefore flow into the sea via waterfalls.

At noon, we explore the small town of Paldiski, located on a peninsula. Tsar Peter the Great developed the town's harbor into both a naval base and a place of exile. In 1783, Paldiski was granted city status. Despite later connections to the railway network, the town was unable to break Tallinn's dominance. Instead, Paldiski became a seaside resort and spa, as well as a center of local fishing. During the Soviet era, Paldiski was sealed off as a forward base and became an inaccessible military restricted area. Two nuclear reactors were even operated here without the knowledge of the Estonians until the Russian military withdrew in 1994. Today, Paldiski strives to reconnect with its hinterland and attract Estonians to the town. The traces of a contradictory history are clearly visible in the townscape. On this excursion, you will not only discover scenic sights but also gain insightful insights into the social environment of the people in present-day Estonia.

Depending on your ship's layover times, on the way back to Tallinn, you might want to visit the impressive ruins of the Padise Monastery, whose foundation stone was laid by Cistercian monks in the 13th century.

You might also consider visiting the Arvo Pärt Center, dedicated to the world-renowned Estonian composer and dedicated to the preservation and research of his musical legacy.
