The first Viennese coffee houses opened their doors in the 17th century. In 1808, coffee makers, whose existence was threatened at the time, were permitted to serve wine and hot meals in the coffee houses, a practice that remains typical to this day.
In the second half of the 19th century, the coffee house increasingly became a place of general communication, considered more or less a second living room by many intellectuals, artists, and politicians. It has been immortalized in literature by many authors and should not be missed on any visit to Vienna.
During this walk, well-known coffee houses will be introduced and their histories told. At the same time, a distinction will be drawn between them and related institutions. The tour concludes with a visit to a coffee house to round off the walk with a typical Viennese coffee snack.
In November 2011, UNESCO declared "Viennese Coffee House Culture" an intangible cultural heritage.
