Description of Tour

The Karl-Marx-Hof is probably the most prominent municipal housing project in Vienna. Built between 1927 and 1930, it originally contained 1,382 apartments for around 5,000 people. However, due to later housing mergers, only 1,268 of these remain today. The architect responsible, Karl Ehn, a student of Otto Wagner, implemented the visions of Red Vienna in an exemplary manner through numerous facilities: large courtyards with extensive gardens for relaxation, a mother's advice center, a dental clinic, a pharmacy, a post office, a library, a youth center, numerous shops, central laundries, etc. Many of these facilities still exist today.
