In the midst of this very special mountain, the Montserrat Natural Park, at only 50 km from Barcelona, is the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat.I invite you to visit this very special place of pilgrimage. The ascent can be made either by the magnificently designed cogwheel railway or, for the brave, by the historic suspension railway. And once up there, we are given the option of another mountain railway ride, this time on the cable car from Sant Joan up to about 1,000 metres with breathtaking views of almost all of Catalonia.There is the option of a 2 to 3 hour hike to climb the highest peak of Montserrat, Sant Jeroni at 1,236 metres. An easy hike, as the difference in altitude is only 230 meters!
Afterwards we visit the monastery, with its variety of art-historical styles, a famous choir of singing boys, a very interesting museum and last but not least the black Madonna "La Moreneta", deeply venerated by the Catalan people.
This excursion can very well be combined with avisit and champagne tasting in a cava winery in the nearby wine-growing region of Penedés and a nice lunch in the countryside. The Romanesque-Gothic monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallés, located on the way, can also be visited. (Car or bus necessary.)
