From the "City of Sails" we drive through the Kumeu wine region to Muriwai (45 min), where you will follow in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary (Hillary Trail) for an approx. After a short picnic you will drive from Maukatia Bay along the Otakamiro Trail to the gannet colony. Witness the natural forces of sun, wind and waves....before heading back to Auckland
Fascinating Wild West Coast
A windswept rugged coastline stretching 60km north showcases Muriwai's spectacular black sand surf beaches. At its southern end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of our few mainland gannet (takapu) breeding colonies (October-April).
Leaving the City of Sails we travel through Kumeu Wine Country on our way to Muriwai (ca.45 Min), we will walk in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary's (Hillary Trail) on a 30-45 minute stroll through Nikau forest with fantastic views.
After a short picnic we will walk from Maukatia Bay along the Otakamiro Trail to the Gannet Colony and soak in breathtaking views along the wild black Sand Coast. We might spot some Maui Dolphins and Fur Seals (Kekeno).
Witness high energy forces at work - sun, wind and waves. Nature dominates here - we won't and can't tame it.
