Description of Tour

This is an exclusive private tour with a private official tour guide/driver. These programs are intended as a suggestion only. All trips, excursions or tours on foot can have a different itinerary depending on the guests' wishes.

Pick up guests at the ship's dock, airport or hotel in Lisbon.

Program:

This trip can also be in reverse order.

Drive through the province of Extremadura to Óbidos, known as the village of the queens. Pictorial entirely surrounded by walls and very well preserved. There we will take an extensive orientation tour. Here guests are invited to taste the famous cherry liqueur Ginginha. Free time at guests' disposal.

Not far from Óbidos is the gorgeous coastal landscape of Peniche.

Peniche is a fishing town of about 30 000 inhabitants, where the fishing industry dominates. Numerous restaurants specialize in fish and seafood.

Selvety rock formations can be admired at Cabo Carvoeiro (short photo stop).

Drive to the small fishing village of Baleal...gorgeous views to the coastal landscape.

En route we enjoy these gorgeous coastal landscapes.

Our drive continues through the rolling countryside of the west coast north of Lisbon until we reach Mafra .

The Palácio Nacional de Mafra has inspired several Portuguese writers, including our Nobel Prize winner for Literature (1998) José Saramago, with the book The Memorial.

Visit the imposing Palácio Nacional de Mafra. Mafra is the largest baroque building in Portugal and larger than the Escorial near Madrid, with 4500 windows and doors, a carillon with 114 bells, among others, reminder of the Golden Age of Portugal, built by the South German architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig, under King Johann V.

*Important: on Tuesday only the Basilica of the Mafra Convent is open.

After the visit we take a short break. Next to the complex is an interesting park/woodland with an old water wheel, where guests can take a relaxing walk or taste the old traditional convent confectionery in the numerous cafes pastelarias opposite.

Return to Lisbon.
