The ancient Romans already appreciated the hot springs. In their health resort, which had existed for over 400 years, they built spas and enjoyed the benefits of the area. They indulged themselves here, feasting on delicacies imported from Rome and enjoying elaborate facilities created especially for the spas. Eight springs in the town and 15 in Burtscheid provided ample space for rich and poor alike. People were by no means bored at Aquis Granae.
When the conflagration nearly destroyed the entire city, Aacheners rebuilt it - into a sophisticated spa. The healing, warm springs, as well as varied entertainment, gambling and surroundings, attracted to Aachen the celebrities from all over Europe. Wiesbaden, Baden-Baden and Spa, which would later steal Aachen's proverbial thunder, were still in their Sleeping Beauty slumber. The world was still meeting in Aachen.
