The Italian nativity scene (presepe), according to tradition, was first presented to the faithful by Francis of Assisi in Umbria in the early 13th century - to make the miraculous event of Christ's birth vivid. From the early 14th century, the custom became increasingly widespread. The presepe differs from the German nativity scene in many ways - Italian nativity scenes are diverse, highly detailed and elaborately designed - not only does every church have its own small or even life-size work of art to offer, but many Italian living rooms also harbor true treasures that have been gathered over the course of generations.
Let yourself be enchanted by the special atmosphere of the Advent season in the capital of Christendom! Waiting for the birth of the Messiah is especially beautiful here - I'll take you to some of the city's most ornate nativity scenes, where water wheels clatter, pizza bakers hawk their wares or the market can be found right next to the stable. The colorful, even (ethnically diverse) life in which Christ's birth is embedded reminds us that we are all God's children and peace on earth is not a mere slogan.
