Bologna is known worldwide as "La Dotta" ("The Learned" because it was home to the first university in Europe in 1088 and the 100, 000 students enrolled nowadays make it a lively and cosmopolitan place), "La Grassa ("The Fat" thanks to the best cuisine in Italy. Even in Italy, a country that takes food very seriously, Bologna stands out. "La Rossa" ("The Red" referring to the colour of its brick buildings) and "La Turrita" ("The Towered" for the presence of 24 towers of the 100 built in the city around the 12 century). The tour will show you the reason why Bologna is known in Italy and abroad as dotta rossa turrita and … grassa. You will learn everything about Food and wines and discover that everyone knows spaghetti Bolognese ... except Italians!
ITINERARY: The tour starts in Piazza Maggiore with the City Hall, Podestà Palace, Neptune's Fountain, King Enzo's Palace, Sala Borsa (closed on Sundays and Mondays morning), Palazzo dei Banchi, Palazzo dei Notai, Accursio Palace and Basilica of Saint Petronio (visit inside according to opening hours and services) with the longest sundial. The tour continues with the medieval Galluzzi court, Piazza Galvani with the Archiginnasio, the first unique seat of the University of Bologna. A Walk through the Food Market up to Saint Steven square with its porticos, palaces and the Saint Steven Churches Complex (visit inside according to opening hours and services). Through the Isolani Court you will reach Via Strada Maggiore and the Two Leaning Towers. In the Mercato di Mezzo some locals will be visited in order to explain the typical food of Bologna and show the close relationship between culture and food.
