We walk from our hotel to the Hippodrome and pay a visit to the majestic Hagia Sophia. The massive main church of Constantinople dominates the cityscape for miles around with its dome. Inside, some exquisite mosaics from the time of Emperor Justinian survive.
Mosaics continue to be the theme: in the Mosaic Museum, formerly the vestibule of the imperial palace.
Fully formed - an architectural jewel the "small" Hagia Sophia, as Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus donated by Emperor Justinian.
After a lunch break, another treat awaits us with the Chora Monastery. Located in the Edirnekapi district by the old Byzantine city wall, it features great frescoes in what is known as the "Palaiological Renaissance style". Amazing also the mural paintings with scenes of the Last Judgment...
