We will start our day visiting the biggest Archaeological collection of artifacts on Crete. We will explore the pre-Greek and Greek art focusing on the Minoan period and going deeper into its significance and development through time.
The visit to one of the most sacred hills on Crete follows. The hill of Juctas, the death place and rebirth place of the most important God of historic Crete, Zeus. A plethora of unique sites are located there dated from 3000bc down to 1100bc, such as the “Little Palace”- a summer palace for Minos of Knossos, the Anemospilia peak sanctuary- the place where the only identified Minoan human sacrifice was conducted, Fourni cemetery with its hundreds of prehistoric tombs and Vathipetro prehistoric industrial area where the oldest European winery and olive oil press were excavated.
The beautiful small town of Archanes, located on the foot of Juktas hill, with its unique Venetian and Neoclassical buildings is a place you should not miss visiting. A walk inside the village and a quick stop in one of the coffee shops of the village, where you can try traditional Greek coffee and local pastries will award you for being there. Lunch break in one of Archanes local restaurants is also highly recommended.
A small traditional village will be our last stop, a place with a very long tradition in cultivating grapevines and producing wine. We shall see all different stages of the wine making process and try traditional wine and raki (local liqueur based on grapes).
