The Pinacoteca di Brera has an extraordinary collection of masterpieces. The permanent collection, which was created by bringing together all the paintings requisitioned as a result of the Napoleonic despoliation of churches and convents, includes famous works as Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, the Pietà (compassion) by Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna's Dead Christ and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus. On display are other pieces of art by such painters as Bernardino Luini, Gentile da Fabriano, Tintoretto, Vincenzo Foppa, Tiziano, Bramante, Correggio, Canaletto, Francesco Hayez (The Kiss), Pellizza da Volpedo and Segantini. An important private collection, donated by the Jesi family, includes works by the most important artists of the early twentieth century such as Boccioni, Medardo Rosso, Braque, Carrà, De Pisis, Marino Marini, Modigliani and Morandi.
