Description of Tour

Ancient Messene is the largest archaeological site in Greece. It’s located on the slopes of mountain Ithomi in a beautiful area that’s covered with olive trees. The city of Messene was founded in the 4th century b.c. in order to become the capital of a new state, that was located to the west of ancient Sparta. In antiquity the Spartans and the Messenians were bitter enemies, having fought a series of bloody wars for hundreds of years. The city was encircled by a long defensive wall, that was about 9 kilometers long, and up to 12.000 people lived within its boundaries.

In the archaeological site you’ll be able to see the best preserved stadium of Ancient Greece, as well as the theater, the Agora (the gathering place) and the sanctuary of Asclepius, dedicated to the god-protector of the city. The museum of Messene is located nearby. Its exhibits include the roman statue of Artemis Lafria, a copy of the famous statue of Doryphoros by Polykleitos, as well as many sculptural groups and statues, which have been created by Damophon, the most famous sculptor of the Peloponnese in Ancient Greece. The tour ends at the Arcadian gate, the main entrance to the ancient city, where parts of the ancient fortifications are still visible.
