This unique forest formation of the island, except from the clearing of the Spaniards about 500 years ago, has been declared a nature reserve since 1954 and is one of the most important laurel forest remnants of the Canary Islands. We hike between 50 m high tree giants, eucalyptus and Canarian mahogany and further 20 tree species to a small forest chapel and through a small ravine to a picnic place. We come across the caves of Toledo. Quartz sand was mined here from the 16th century, which was needed to make the first wine decanters.
