Description of Tour

The wine-growing region Penedés is located about 60 km southwest of Barcelona, directly on the Mediterranean coast. It is a slightly hilly, westward rising, old cultivated land. The scenic charm, the Mediterranean climate, the vegetation, the rather small-scale viticulture and the partly very old, pretty villages make it a model example of Mediterranean wine country. In addition, Catalan cuisine is famous and popular throughout Spain, so there are quite a few good restaurants here.

Even the Phoenicians grew wine here in the sixth century BC, and the tradition has continued ever since. Today, the Penedés wine region has DO status (Denominación de Origen). Produced on an area of about 26,000 hectares annually a good 170 million liters of wine, both from red and white grapes.

In the Penedés wine region, both domestic white grape varieties such as Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada are grown, but also German and French varieties such as Riesling and Chardonnay. The domestic varieties are characterized by their fruity, in the case of Parellada also often acidic aroma. Riesling is predominantly fruity, while Chardonnay also produces riper wines.

The situation is similar for the red varieties. Here, too, indigenous varieties such as Garnatxa and Tempranillo exist alongside varieties such as Merlot or Pinot Noir. Red wines from Penedés convince mostly by their full body and unfold their aroma often only matured.

However, a large part of the harvested grapes is used for the Cava production and does not come as wine of the D.O.. Penedés on the market.

As Cava high quality Catalan sparkling wines are called. Produced according to the "méthode champenoise" (champagne method), they are considered a Catalan speciality with its own character. To avoid confusion with Champagne due to the traditional similar Catalan and Spanish names, the protected designation of origin Cava eventually prevailed. Similar quality requirements apply as for Champagne from France.

I can offer you a tour of one or more Cava wineries, either as a rounding off of a Montserrat visit or as an independent tour, visiting different Cava and wine producers, both well-known large producers and small organic growers. Naturally with extensive cava and wine tasting!

If interested, the nearby beautiful seaside resort of Sitges, with coffee break, can also be visited on the return trip.
