Description of Tour

In 1955, parallel to the Federal Garden Show, Kassel art professor Arnold Bode offered modern artists a forum with an exhibition of modern and contemporary art. The works of art - some of which had been labelled "degenerate art" a few years earlier - attracted 134,000 visitors to the makeshift museum ruins of the Fridericianum. The documenta - now the world's largest exhibition of modern and contemporary art, attracting some 900,000 visitors - takes place in Kassel every five years for exactly 100 days. In addition to the presentation in the Fridericianum, the documenta is repeatedly shown in various museums, factories, halls throughout the city. The previous documenta exhibitions have left their mark on the entire city. Numerous works of art (including Himmelsstürmer, Spitzhacke, Die Fremden, Erdkilometer) have remained in Kassel and been integrated into the cityscape. We will show you these works and give you an exciting insight into the world of modern and contemporary art of the last 50 years.
