Description of Tour

Old Masters Picture Gallery

Join us on a visit to one of the most important art galleries in Europe! Around 600 paintings are presented on three floors, many of which come from the estate of Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel. This art-loving prince amassed a collection of paintings of European standing in the 18th century. His preference was for the Flemish and Dutch of the 17th century, making the Kassel collection one of the largest outside the Netherlands! Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt and Frans Hals are representative of the gallery's high-caliber focus. It is therefore not surprising that Kassel is home to the oldest and perhaps largest Rembrandt collection in Germany, where you can marvel at the "Blessing of St. James" and the "Portrait of Saskia of Uylenburgh", among others.

A large number of other internationally renowned painters enrich the diversity and wealth of the Kassel gallery. Look forward to Albrecht Dürer's famous "Portrait of Elsbeth Tucher" and the wonderful works of Lucas Cranach. Marvel at the magnificent "Portrait of a General" by Titian and listen to the exciting stories in the works by Tintoretto, Murillo and Poussin.

Whether history painting, portrait, landscape or still life - there is something for every taste in art!
