The Escorial, or more specifically "Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial" was hailed as the eighth wonder of the world when it was completed in the late 16th century. Not without reason, because the grandiose complex at an altitude of more than 1000 meters in the middle of the Sierra de Guadarrama still amazes all visitors. The basilica with its 92 meter high dome, the convent with its first-class collection of paintings, the royal apartments, the library and the pantheon of kings are the testament of the Habsburg Philip II carved in stone.
A trip to the mountains is an ideal opportunity not only to get to know this monumental structure, but also to get to know the mind of the controversial Spanish ruler. And along the way, explore the equally majestic pine forests and mountain ranges just 60 kilometers from Madrid.
Briefly about the procedure: After arriving by S-Bahn (1 hour 15 minutes) through an idyllic landscape of pine and oak forests, we undertake a 20-minute climb to the monastery palace. Those who are not good on foot can hop on a taxi at the S-Bahn station, which will take you to the palace complex in 5 minutes. There we will begin our approx. two-hour tour of this unique building. And after so much hiking and culture, it's time for a quick bite to eat and a breather in the picturesque village next door, "the upper Escorial". Then we start the way back to the lower village to the S-Bahn and the return journey to Madrid.
PLEASE NOTE: I advise against booking for Sunday morning, because services usually take place in the basilica until around 2 p.m. on this day.
