This is the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Penisnsula. Much less visited and to my mind, more attractive than its Mediteranean equivalent. Waves rolling in of the Bay of Biscay make this a surfers paradise whith villages such as Mundaka being internationally renowned among surfers.
Starting and finishing in Bilbao this route calls in at the “Puente Colgante” which links Getxo with Portugalete then takes us west to east calling in at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, and the fishing village of Bermeo. We then explore the Urdaibai reserve and head to the picturesque village of Elantxobe. Following this intricate coastline with its inlets and hidden coves our journey continues to Ea where we stop for a leisurely lunch. The afternoon sees us in Guernika. A town of tremendous importance in Basque political history and also scene of the tragic aerial bombing during The Spanish Civil War, which later inspired Picasso's painting "Guernika".
